The brain is the body’s control center, managing crucial functions like speech, memory, critical thinking, and problem-solving. Recognizing this, parents and schools must jump in early to boost their children’s cognitive and intellectual abilities.
Why start early? The early years of a person’s life are when the brain is most receptive to growth and development. That’s why this evidence-based SEL lesson teaches kindergarten students the positive actions to improve their intellectual health. Nurturing intellectual wellness this early not only boosts their academic performance but also enhances their self-awareness and self-concept.
The lesson opens with a continuation of the students’ adventure to Castle Self-Concept. After journeying through the Kingdom of Positive Action and collecting keys, they are now opening the castle gates. To pass through each gate, they must succeed in the tests their puppet friends, Picks-It and Nix-It, prepare for them.
"Taking care of intellectual health is not only for expanding knowledge and skills. It's about unlocking the full potential of children and empowering them to excel in all aspects of life."
Having passed through the first gate, they now stand before the second gate. Before the test reveals itself, the students must remember the intellectual positive actions they have learned in the Land of Intellectual. The teacher helps jog their memory by asking questions about the stories and activities they participated in Positive Action’s Unit 2.
"What does it mean to be curious," “How did the animals satisfy their curiosity,” “How can you practice creativity?” These are some of the questions the students answer. In no time, they remember each positive action they must practice to stimulate their brains and enhance their critical thinking skills.
The lesson ends with the puppets commending the students for a job well done. The students have shown advanced memory skills and are ready for the next challenge. But they must wait until the next lesson. Until then, they must continue sharpening their young minds.
Taking care of intellectual health is not only for expanding knowledge and skills. It's about unlocking the full potential of children and empowering them to excel in all aspects of life. From critical thinking to creativity, communication to problem-solving, enhancing brainpower is crucial for kindergarten students as it sets the stage for a lifetime of success and resilience.
