Continual self-improvement is the hallmark of unit 6 in the Positive Action curriculum. This evidence-based SEL lesson focuses on one of the eight positive actions integral to this process: being persistent.
The lesson begins with a brief review of the previously discussed positive actions for self-improvement. Here, the teacher adeptly emphasizes how doing positive actions makes individuals feel good about themselves.
As the topic unfolds, the term "Persistence" is introduced into the classroom. Dedicating due emphasis to its importance, the teacher writes down the word and its definition on the board. Students are gently encouraged to recite it together multiple times. Through repetition, familiarity embeds itself within every mind present in class.
"Overall, this SEL lesson effectively teaches persistence to kids. It also highlights the importance of perseverance in driving personal progress. By teaching this lesson, educators nurture a generation of individuals who get going when the going gets tough."
The SEL lesson then transitions to an engaging story about Lisa and Steamy. Grade 1 students learn how Lisa and her friends are helping Steamy, a much-beloved old train. They aim to get Steamy up and running again after years of being idle.
Although Steamy is operating perfectly now, trouble lies in his pathway — quite literally. It seems the track essential for his movement needs repairing. However, few people in their town wish to contribute to this project.
Undeterred by this apparent roadblock, Lisa refuses to give up easily. She exhibits unwavering persistence to ensure Steamy can once again travel on a safe track.
Drawing parallels from the story, the lesson shifts focus by guiding students through the Positive Thoughts-Actions-Feelings Circle. This activity allows them to understand better how positive thoughts and actions of resilience influence how they feel about themselves.
After the class discussion, the crescendo of the lesson reaches its peak. Grade 1 students, now attuned to persistence, join in a collective rendition of the motivational song "One Step at a Time." Its lyrics encourage determination in children and reinforce that every small effort contributes to a larger, impactful change.
Overall, this SEL lesson effectively teaches persistence to kids. It also highlights the importance of perseverance in driving personal progress. By teaching this lesson, educators nurture a generation of individuals who get going when the going gets tough.
