Thankfulness, or gratitude, is a multifaceted emotion transcending mere appreciation for surface-level gifts. It is a dynamic force that propels individuals to seek and acknowledge the goodness and beauty that permeates every facet of their existence, no matter how minute or hidden. Managing feelings of thankfulness involves nurturing an active awareness, purposefully directing one’s attention to the countless wonders that grace one’s life every single day.
In this evidence-based SEL lesson, grade 1 students embark on a transformative journey of embracing the positive action of managing feelings of thankfulness. The lesson begins with the teacher expressing heartfelt gratitude to the entire class, setting a positive and appreciative tone for the session.
As the classroom atmosphere becomes infused with warmth and gratitude, the students are encouraged to sing the Positive Action song, "I'm Thankful to You." The lyrics are a sincere tribute to a caring friend, expressing thankfulness and the intention to reciprocate kindness. By engaging in this song, the students gain a deeper understanding of the power of gratitude and its profound impact on fostering genuine connections and nurturing relationships.

To further the students’ grasp of the lesson concepts, they are prompted to think about the things they are grateful for that do not require money. They are reminded of the invaluable gifts of good health, the support of friends and family, the privilege of living in a free country, the value of having a sharp mind, and the opportunity to attend a pleasant and nurturing school. Through this exercise, the students recognize that gratitude extends beyond material possessions, and they begin to appreciate the intangible and often overlooked aspects of their lives.
In the final phase of the lesson, young learners engage in a collective brainstorming session, where they explore positive actions that can be employed to express their thankfulness. Here, the simple gesture of saying "thank you" is emphasized. Grade 1 students are also reminded that expressing gratitude is a positive action that makes them feel good about themselves.
By cultivating a practice of managing feelings of thankfulness, grade 1 students gain more than just a fleeting sense of happiness. They enter a virtuous cycle known as the Happy Thoughts-Actions-Feelings Circle. As they actively nurture feelings of gratitude, they are inspired to engage in positive actions that not only benefit others but also contribute to their well-being. These actions, in turn, reinforce their feelings of thankfulness, creating a continuous loop of positive feelings and actions that uplift both themselves and those around them.
Managing feelings of thankfulness is an invaluable skill that grade 1 students can carry throughout their lives. As they grow and mature, they can draw upon this skill to cultivate inner peace and joy as they navigate life's challenges.
