Self-management is one of the social and emotional learning (SEL) core competencies that young learners must develop to become well-rounded individuals who are content and thriving. Positive Action dedicated an entire unit with 30 lessons to mastering this fundamental skill.
Within this unit, students embark on a transformative journey to learn the art of managing various aspects of their lives: time, actions, possessions, money, talent, thoughts, actions, and feelings. The first lesson opens with a captivating story about two curious mice named Maurice and Marrott.
An avid reader, Maurice stumbles upon a very old slip of paper hidden in the attic. He unravels it, and a mysterious map comes to light. It is adorned with an X and the captivating words "The Greatest Treasure of All." A surge of excitement courses through Maurice's veins, and he wastes no time sharing this thrilling discovery with his cousin Marrott. Together, they embark on an exciting adventure.
"Managing oneself is a positive action that improves self-concept, brings immense satisfaction, ignites a sense of accomplishment, and ultimately makes one feel good about oneself."
Guided by the mysterious map, the two mice find themselves inside a house down the lane from their place. As they approach their destination, Marrott reminds Maurice of the importance of slowing down and engaging in careful searching. Acknowledging the wisdom in Marrott's words, Maurice pauses to reflect and poses a crucial question: "What is the greatest treasure of all?"
The first-grade teacher skillfully harnesses the students' enthusiasm, encouraging them to reflect upon Maurice's query and identify the treasures they possess. Each first-grade student is invited to share their thoughts. As they exchange perspectives, the classroom becomes an environment of shared learning, where students not only nurture their abilities to express ideas and opinions but also learn empathy and respect for their classmates’ viewpoints.
To support the students' progress in self-management, the teacher introduces the Positive Behavior Chart. This chart is a tool for tracking and rewarding positive behaviors exhibited by the first graders. It serves as positive reinforcement to help students understand the benefits of good behavior and become self-motivated to continue doing positive actions.
Managing oneself is a positive action that improves self-concept, brings immense satisfaction, ignites a sense of accomplishment, and ultimately makes one feel good about oneself. With their curiosity piqued through this lesson, students are now ready and eager to acquire the necessary skills to effectively manage their lives.
