To lead a happy and healthy life, it is important for individuals to like themselves and be their own good friend. This means choosing positive thoughts and actions and feeling confident in one’s ability to do so.
To illustrate this point, Grade 1 students listen to the continuation of the story of Maurice the Mouse. As a quick recap, Maurice had shown a picture of a handsome mouse to his cousin Marrott. However, Marrott had a different opinion, as he found the mouse in the picture to be discouraged, grouchy, and tired. They both take turns looking at the picture and while Maurice sees a mouse that only keeps looking better every time, Marrott sees the opposite.
"The lesson is clear: one can see oneself in a good way by doing positive actions. By choosing to think and act positively, one can improve their self-concept and mood."
Maurice is curious to know why Marrott is unable to see the goodness in the picture, despite having a comfortable place to live and a lot of room to play. He suggests that Marrott should cheer up, and the idea strikes a chord with him. Over the next few days, the two mice explore the house and have fun together. Marrott starts to feel good about himself and happy once again.
When the two mice remember the picture, Marrott hurries to turn it around so that he doesn't have to see it. But when he looks again, he is amazed to see a very happy, handsome mouse. Maurice comes in to take a closer look, and suddenly, there are two fine-looking mice!
Grade 1 students come to a realization that all along Maurice and Marrott were looking in a mirror. The teacher passes around a mirror and asks the students to try to make the picture of themselves the happiest, finest-looking picture they can make and say one positive thing they see about themselves.
The lesson is clear: one can see oneself in a good way by doing positive actions. By choosing to think and act positively, one can improve their self-concept and mood. This is an important lesson for young learners, as it sets them on a path toward self-love and self-confidence. It also teaches them to appreciate the good things in themselves and others and to find joy and happiness in their surroundings.
