An essential aspect of personal growth and social-emotional learning is being honest with one's feelings. It's a lesson that can be illustrated vividly through the tale of Vanishio, a recurring character in Positive Action’s Grade 1 curriculum. Vanishio's journey is a powerful reminder of the consequences of not acknowledging one's emotions.
As Vanishio continues to be dishonest with himself, something peculiar happens: he begins to shrink. With each untruth he tells, he grows smaller and smaller. As he diminishes further, he defiantly proclaims, "I'm not scared." This declaration sparks an intriguing discussion in the classroom about the mistake Vanishio is making.
Grade 1 students quickly realize that Vanishio's mistake isn't in feeling scared; it's in denying that feeling. Honesty begins with acknowledging one's emotions. This realization opens the door to a broader conversation about emotional honesty.
"Through this SEL lesson, students learn that honesty with oneself paves the way for personal growth, emotional resilience, and healthier relationships with others. As they are taught to embrace their emotions, they are empowered to navigate the complexities of life with a profound sense of self-awareness and authenticity."
Maurice the Mouse, another familiar face in the classroom, joins the discussion. Maurice, wise beyond his diminutive size, emphasizes the need to be honest with one's feelings. He highlights that acknowledging one's emotions is the first step in responding effectively to a situation.
To drive home the concept of being truthful with oneself and others about feelings, the class embarks on a journey through the Positive Thoughts-Actions-Feelings Circle. This concept illustrates that when one is honest about their feelings, even if those feelings are less than desirable, it leads to positive actions and, ultimately, positive feelings.
After the discussion, the students are given practical experience expressing and being honest about their feelings. They are asked a series of questions designed to evoke genuine emotional responses. By practicing truth-telling as it relates to emotions, students develop self-awareness, one of the five SEL core competencies.
